Romantic Getaway Ideas On a Budget

July 08, 2008 - Living on a budget these days? If you are like most Americans you know that high fuel prices are making traditional romantic getaways seem impossible. Making it even worse is the stress put on couples during difficult financial times. It's important to stay connected to the special person in your life when times are tough so you can still be together when the dust settles. With that in mind, here are some low budget ideas for quick romantic getaways that won't break the bank, as well as some helpful tips. Remember that adding the element of surprise is always a nice touch!

Picnics - Often forgotten but always romantic, picnics are a great low-cost way to relax and enjoy each other's company. Pack up a few sandwiches from home, grab a few pieces of fresh fruit, mix up a pitcher of something cool to drink, bring a few napkins and a blanket and you have the makings of a perfect picnic. An ice chest or small cooler of some kind works great for transporting your edibles! Remember the little things like plastic or paperware, baggies for cleanup, condiments, a good book or two and a nice big blanket! You can picnic as inexpensively as your budget requires. For a little more Look into purchasing an actual picnic basket complete with silver cutlery, wine glasses, and napkins. Basic baskets can be very reasonably priced while more elaborate ones can cost considerably more. Also consider visiting a specialty foods store or local grocery to buy a crispy baguette of bread, some fresh fruit salad, and aromatic cheeses as an alternative to sandwiches. Trade in the soda for a nice and inexpensive bottle of white wine.

Camping - If you and your special someone share a love of the outdoors, there is no better time than the summer and fall to enjoy them. Grab what you need from home or visit your local sporting goods store for supplies. Also, remember that thrift stores are great places to buy very inexpensive second hand supplies. Contact your local parks and recreation departments to find out about any restrictions or campground fees or to reserve your own little spot under the stars.

Hotel Home - Turn your own home into a romantic retreat with a little creativity and some elbow grease! Rearrange the furniture and drag your bed out into the living room for a night. Light every candle in the house, fill your squeaky clean bath tub with bubbles and flower petals, rent some romantic movies, and have breakfast, lunch and dinner delivered! Transform your home into an effortless retreat where you and your partner don't need to leave bed.

Scenic Surroundings - No matter where you live there are some spectacular surroundings within a short drive. Take a walk under the cool shade of tall trees or lounge together beside the nearest creek, waterfall, lake or ocean. Find a spot with a view and star gaze or watch the twinkling of city lights from afar. Grab some dinner to go and you've the makings for a romantic and scenic dinner for two!

Big Savings on Accommodations - With airfare prices on the rise, now is the time to take advantage of some great hotel deals. With fewer people flying and traveling, many hotels are offering big discounts to bring travelers through their doors. You don't have to fly anywhere. Look local. Find a resort or small B&B near you and take advantage of great deals close to home.

Local Functions and Events - Check local newspapers or community websites for lists of festivals and events in your area. Culinary, Wine, and Art festivals are common this time of year, so take full advantage! Although some may charge admission, many are free to the public. Make a day of it. Also, there has been a resurgence of community film screenings displaying classic films in local parks on the big screen. If there's nothing in particular going on, remember your local botanical gardens, museum, and zoos can offer a nice days getaway from the ordinary.

What Are Friends For? - Babysitting! So pack up those little ones for a night and send 'em off to give you and partner a night alone. Ask friends and family for help! That's what they're there for. Borrow some camping gear from your neighbor, swap your car for your sister's hybrid for the weekend, ask your Mom to make her famous potato salad to add to your picnic basket! During hard economic times, network with the people in your life to provide support and assistance to eachother. Plan ahead to be courteous, of course, and be prepared to always return a favor!
